Important Cybersecurity Measures for Remote-Based Businesses

Today, over 3.7 million Americans wake up and log on their computers to start their work day. This is how some businesses operate in the 21st century. The convenience, cost, and effectiveness of remote working have enabled most businesses to adopt this model in furtherance of their business objectives. In a 2016 study by the Global Workplace Analytics, over 50% of the workforce in the United States is now allowed the benefit of partially working from home.

Initially, this trend seemed strange, but as time goes by, it is now becoming the norm. The ability to work remotely especially for the non-self-employed population, has gone over and beyond the 100% increase mark since 2005.

While it is exciting for both the employer and the employee to work remotely, there are certain factors that should be closely examined and discussed to ensure that information security is a top agenda. Information security professionals advise employers to put in place the following security measures if their employees are to be safeguarded when working remotely.

Protection for Employees Working from Home

If your remote working model means employees working from their homes, some of the things you need to consider include usage of strong, cryptic passwords on all accounts whether personal or work accounts. Also ensure they do not duplicate passwords. The two factor authentication system is important because it gives your employees an additional layer of security for their accounts.

All the work devices should be installed with credible antivirus software, firewalls, web filtering and encryption systems like the Dell SonicWALL. These antiviruses and firewalls must always be updated so as to keep them up to the challenge with regards to information security.

If you have an IT department, you can work with them so as to set up a virtual private network which means an additional security measure on your employees’ home internet.

Employees Working in Other Places Apart from Home

There is also a possibility that your employees could utilize malls, business parks, and other joint spaces as they work remotely. To ensure that they are still protected even in these setups, their devices must always be password protected.

You should also advise them against accessing sensitive company information on unsecured networks or Wi-Fi. This is because public Wi-Fi may compromise personal and professional accounts and enhance the risks of signal sniffing. A majority of hackers put up accounts that resemble the names of frequented locations with the aim of stealing important information and data from users.

Using a VPN (virtual private network) when accessing company data and setting up your phone as a hotspot can be viable alternatives to safeguarding your information.

A Cybersecurity Policy for Employees

In order to foster an environment that is strongly committed to cybersecurity, employers must come up with cybersecurity policies that prioritize staff training on security matters. Remind your employees on the value of information and the responsibility that the company has in protecting such information.

When creating the cybersecurity policy, identify the security risks as well as threats that your business faces and develop clear procedures for all employees irrespective of where they are. This will ensure your company data and employees are safeguarded even as they work remotely.

Airtel Says Will Respond to TRAI, DoT on Interconnect Penalty

Airtel Says Will Respond to TRAI, DoT on Interconnect Penalty

Bharti Chairman Sunil Mittal today said the company will “respond” to TRAI as well as Department of Telecom on the penalty recommended by regulator on it for allegedly denying interconnectivity to newcomer Reliance Jio.

He also called for moderation in spectrum prices so as to ensure that enough resources are available for setting up telecom infrastructure which is vital for economic growth.

“We will respond to TRAI (telecom regulator) and DoT when the time comes,” Mittal said on the sidelines of a GSMA event. “The company will do what needs to be done,” he added, without elaborating.

Mittal said however that “Points of interconnect have been liberally given…points of interconnect is not an issue.” In a setback to incumbent telecom operators, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India last week suggested a penalty of about Rs. 1,050 crores each on Airtel and Vodafone, and Rs. 950 crores in case of Idea Cellular.

In its recommendation to DoT, TRAI said it found the trio to be non-compliant with licence conditions and service quality norms given the high rate of call failures and congestion at interconnect points for Reliance Jio.Announcing its second quarter results yesterday, Bharti Airtel, which is India’s largest mobile operator, had said that mobile business had experienced a slowdown in growth due to free services being offered by a new operator (Reliance Jio).

“When something out there in the market is free and it’s being consumed, obviously data growth in that sense will taper off for a period of time…let us wait till December…that is the time we need to assess…after that a couple of quarters …to see how it settles down,” Mittal today said.

Asked if the company was facing competitive pressures because of the launch of Reliance Jio’s 4G services, Mittal said “competitive pressures in this industry have been there for 20 years”.

Earlier while speaking at the opening session of GSMA conference ‘Mobile 360’, Mittal called for moderation of spectrum prices. “We would like to see some of the spectrum prices being more moderated. As an industry, we believe this vital resource is better utilised out on the radio base stations than staying with the government and other government users. Because it has a multiplier effect, it can move the economy, and create momentum in the economy,” he said.

In the recently-concluded spectrum auction, the debt- ridden telecom sector had ignored premium radiowaves in 700MHz band – which was put up for sale for the first time – at a reserve or base price of Rs. 11,485 crores per MHz.

Industry bodies like GSMA have urged Indian Government to reconsider the pricing for 700MHz band, which failed to attract buyers due to its “unrealistically” high pricing.

Chinese Firm Says It Did All It Could Ahead of Cyber-Attack

Chinese Firm Says It Did All It Could Ahead of Cyber-Attack

A Chinese electronics maker that has recalled products sold in the US said Tuesday it did all it could to prevent a massive cyber-attack that briefly blocked access to websites including Twitter and Netflix.

Hangzhou Xiongmai Technology has said some of its web-connected cameras and digital recorders became compromised because customers failed to change their default passwords.

Liu Yuexin, Xiongmai’s marketing director, told The Associated Press that Xiongmai and other companies across the home surveillance equipment industry were made aware of the vulnerability in April 2015. Liu said Xiongmai moved quickly to plug the gaps and should not be singled out for criticism.

“We don’t know why there is a spear squarely pointed at our chest,” Liu said.

The hack has heightened long-standing fears among security experts that the rising number of interconnected home gadgets, appliances and even automobiles represent a cyber-security nightmare. The convenience of being able to control home electronics via the web also leaves them more vulnerable to malicious intruders, experts say.

Unidentified hackers seized control of gadgets including Xiongmai’s on Friday and directed them to launch an attack that temporarily disrupted access to a host of sites, ranging from Twitter and Netflix toAmazon and Spotify, according to US web security researchers. The “distributed denial-of-service” attack targeted servers run by Dyn Inc., an internet company located in Manchester, New Hampshire. These types of attacks work by overwhelming targeted computers with junk data so that legitimate traffic can’t get through.

“The issue with the consumer-connected device is that there is nearly no firewall between devices and the public internet,” said Tracy Tsai, an analyst at Gartner, adding that many consumers leave the default setting on devices for ease of use without knowing the dangers.

Researchers at the New York-based cyber-security firm Flashpoint said most of the junk traffic heaped on Dyn came from internet-connected cameras and video-recording devices that had components made by Xiongmai. Those components had little security protection, so devices they went into became easy to exploit.

In an acknowledgement of its products’ role in the hack, Xiongmai said in a statement Monday that it would recall products sold in the US before April 2015 to demonstrate “social responsibility.” It said products sold after that date had been patched and no longer constitute a danger.

The company, which also makes dashboard cameras and computer chips, said it would recall several models of web-connected cameras and has offered customers a software security fix. The recall will apply only to devices sold under Xiongmai’s name. As an original equipment manufacturer, close to 95 percent of the company’s products are sold by other firms that repackage its devices under their own brand names, said Liu, the marketing director.

Liu refused to specify how many units the company expected to recall from the US other than that it could be in the thousands.

Xiongmai and Dahua, a video surveillance manufacturer also based in the eastern Chinese tech hub of Hangzhou, first came under scrutiny several weeks ago after Flashpoint assessed that hackers had controlled their devices to attack the website of cyber-security writer Brian Krebs, among other targets. Dahua has responded by saying it is dedicated to testing vulnerabilities, and has offered discounts for replacement equipment.

Xiongmai has adopted a less conciliatory stance. It downplayed its culpability this week, saying that as even the world’s largest technology companies experience security lapses, “we are not afraid to also experience it once.”

Xiongmai also slammed as “completely untrue, malicious and defamatory” reports about its products and appended to its statement a letter from its lawyers threatening litigation.

Mark James, an expert with Slovakia-based security company ESET, said that he doubted Xiongmai could be held liable for an attack such as Friday’s, but that the company’s officials “obviously recognize a concern here.”

“Hopefully other manufacturers will follow suit and take a look at what they can do to increase security of their own products,” he said.

Russian Indicted in US on Charges of Hacking LinkedIn

Russian Indicted in US on Charges of Hacking LinkedIn

A federal grand jury in California has indicted a Russian man for hacking computers belonging to LinkedIn Corp , Dropbox and Formspring, the US Justice Department said on Friday.

Yevgeniy Nikulin was arrested on October 5 by officials in the Czech Republic and remains in custody in Prague, the Justice Department said in a news release.

LinkedIn said at the time of his arrest that it was related to a 2012 breach at the social networking company that may have compromised credentials of 100 million users, prompting a massive password reset operation.

It was not immediately clear if US officials had begun extradition proceedings to have Nikulin, who was indicted on Thursday by a federal grand jury in Oakland, California, brought to the United States to stand trial.

According to the DOJ, Nikulin is accused of accessing computers belonging to LinkedIn, Dropbox and Formspring and obtaining information from them.

The U.S. attorneys office could not immediately be reached for further comment. It was not yet clear who would be representing Nikulin in the proceedings.

He is also alleged to have used credentials of LinkedIn and Formspring employees in connection with the computer intrusions. Further, Nikulin is alleged to have engaged in a conspiracy with unnamed co-conspirators to traffic stolen Formspring user credentials.

The indictment charges Nikulin with three counts of computer intrusion, two counts of intentional transmission of information, code, or command causing damage to a protected computer; two counts of aggravated identity theft; one count of trafficking in unauthorised access devices; and one count of conspiracy.

WhatsApp for iPhone Update Brings Photo and Video Editing, Group Invite Link Features

WhatsApp for iPhone Update Brings Photo and Video Editing, Group Invite Link Features

  • The update brings the ability to draw and write on photos
  • Group Invite Link lets admin invite users to groups by sharing a link
  • WhatsApp for iPhone UI has been tweaked a bit as well

After introducing it on Android, WhatsApp has brought along the ability to draw, add text, and emojis on top of photos and videos to the iPhone app as well . The update also brings another new feature called ‘Group Invite Link’ that allows the admin to invite people simply by sharing a unique link with them.

WhatsApp for iPhone version 2.16.12 brings Snapchat-like abilities to scribble, draw, add text, and even emojis to photos and videos. This ability was first seen on the beta Android app, and then later was introduced for all Android users earlier this month. Now, iPhone users can also use these editing tools without ever leaving the app.

Once you finish clicking a photo or a video in-app, these additional new tools pop-up on the top right-edge of the screen. The smiley icon will pop up all Apple emojis, the ‘T’ lets you write on top of images and videos, and the drawing tool lets you scribble away to your heart’s content.

As mentioned earlier, the WhatsApp for iPhone update also brings a new feature called ‘Group Invite Link’. This feature allows the admin to send users a unique link to a new user. The user can then just click on the link and they will automatically become a member of the group. This unique invite link is found in the group info, and the link can be shared across other platforms as well. When someone tries to join a group using one of these links, they are given basic details about the group like name and other existing participants.

The update also brings a few design changes like the user profile picture and name position has been changed. Earlier, the name showed up in the top centre, while the profile picture sat at top right. However, with this update both the name and profile picture show up on the top left. This change is welcome because often iPhone users mistakenly ended up WhatsApp calling people, while all they wanted to do was see the user’s profile picture.

Do You Need to Buy an Industrial Blender?

Many businesses need to use industrial blenders for a wide variety of tasks. Many different industries employ the use of industrial blenders. There may come a time in the future where you find that you are in need of an industrial blender because your old one has bitten the dust. If this is the case, you should not rush into any purchases. Take your time to carefully examine all of the commercial blenders that are currently available on the market. This will allow you to get a very good idea of the differences between the various manufacturers and models. Here are a few tips that will come in handy as you look for an industrial blender.

Image result for Do You Need to Buy an Industrial Blender?
1. Do you have the required amount of square footage in your place of business for the blender?

Some industrial blenders can be quite large in size. Therefore, it is very important that you never assume that you will be able to fit an industrial blender into your work area. You need to verify the size of the blender and the square footage of the area where you plan on installing it. It is always better to find out this info ahead of time before you make arrangements to have the blender shipped to you. Many people are horrified to discover than their blender will not fit after they already paid for it. You may need to do some renovations if the blender is too big.

2. Determine the specific type of blender that you will need for the specific substances you are going to be mixing.

It would be a mistake to assume that all industrial blenders are capable of mixing the same things. That is simply not the case. You will find that some paddle mixers are better at mixing certain substances than other types of blenders. This is why it is so important for you to educate yourself about these machines. This will help you to avoid buying the wrong one.

3. What type of maintenance requirements does the blender have?

You are going to need to learn how to take care of your blender after you buy it. These are machines that will stop functioning if you do not care for them properly. This is why you should get a good idea of the amount of maintenance that a model requires before you buy it.
