Android 8.0 Oreo Brings ‘Rescue Party’ Feature That Helps Rectify Bootloop Issues

Android 8.0 Oreo is rolling out to compatible devices, with users on the Android Beta Program getting the advantage of receiving it first. Early adopters have been raving about the new features like picture-picture mode, new notification panel, and more, but there are a few useful hidden tricks that Google has added with Android Oreo, that weren’t even spotted in developer previews. A feature called Rescue Party arrives with Android 8.0 Oreo, and it essentially recognises if your smartphone has been on reboot loop, and immediately takes measures to stop or rectify it.

Rescue Party is enabled by default on all devices running on Android Oreo, and OEMs do not have to add anything additional with respect to hardware for this to work. Android 8.0 Oreo will recognise if your smartphone is running through a reboot loop, more commonly known as bootloop, and take different actions to bring the smartphone back to normal working conditions.

It will check if core components are performing the same actions again and again with failed final results. Android Oreo will send the ‘rescue party’ if the system restarts at least five times in five minutes, or if a specific app crashes more than five times in 30 minutes. Rescue Party lies within the /services/core/java/com/android/server/RescueParty/java string of code.

Android 8.0 Oreo Brings 'Rescue Party' Feature That Helps Rectify Bootloop IssuesWhile Rescue Party is enabled by default, OEMs are given the option to disable it if they so prefer. However, this feature is particularly useful in scenarios when things go wrong during a custom ROM installation, or updating software.

If primary rectification measures don’t work to bring back the smartphone into normal working state then Rescue Party forces the device to go into recovery mode, where the user can then factory reset the device. While this is not the ideal solution as you would lose all data on the phone, it is much better than it being useless, and sending it for replacement or repair every time this happens.

Apart from the OTA updates rolling out to specific devices, system images are also available for those who cannot wait. [Android Oreo brings]( notification dots, autofill, smart text selection, redesigned settings, and much more.

iPhone 8 to Launch on September 12, 512GB Variant Expected: Reports

Apple is still silent about its annual September iPhone event, and given that August is almost ending, the anticipation continues to grow. If Apple follows tradition, then the iPhone 8, iPhone 7s, and iPhone 7s Plus will all be unveiled at an event in the first or second week of September (most likely September 6 or 12). Rumours about the anniversary edition iPhone 8 have been overflowing, and today’s leak brings more information on the possible storage variants of the OLED smartphone, and the likelihood of a September 12 event launch date as well.

Chinese tipster GeekBar claims that the iPhone 8 will come in 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. While the former two have been tipped earlier, the latter 512GB storage variant is fresh but welcome information. The base variant sees storage double from last year, which offered 32GB as the starting storage point. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had earlier tipped at 64GB and 256GB as well, but he didn’t say that other options won’t be added.

Furthermore, the tipster claims that the NAND storage options will be sourced from varied suppliers. 64GB and 256GB chips will be sourced from Toshiba and SanDisk, and the 512GB chips will be sourced from Samsung and Hynix. This bump in storage is a welcome change considering 4K content is becoming increasingly popular, and the iPhone 8 will have new AR and 3D sensing features to play around with, demanding more storage.

iPhone 8 to Launch on September 12, 512GB Variant Expected: ReportsSeparately, Mac4Ever reports, citing carrier sources, that Apple will host its iPhone 8 event on September 12. The report says that its sources have already been informed about launch details to start preparing for marketing and inventory. While nothing official has been announced from Apple’s end, if this leak turns out to be true, then the three phones will go on pre-order the same week on September 15, and be made available on September 22. This presumption is based on Apple’s traditional rollout pattern, but there’s no guarantee than the Cupertino giant will stick to the same format this year.

Recent reports seem to suggest that while there won’t be any supply constraints in the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, the iPhone 8 may be available in very limited quantities at first.

The iPhone 8 is expected to bring significant improvements and breakthrough features this year, with an OLED bezel-less panel, no home button, a vertical dual camera setup with AR capabilities, a 3D sensing front and rear camera, facial recognition, wireless charging, and better waterproofing.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Will Likely Be an Amazon India Exclusive

Samsung is set to unveil its next phablet in the Galaxy Note series on Wednesday. The Galaxy Note 8 has been pretty much detailed in every way over the many reports in the past few weeks. We know that the Galaxy Note 8 will look similar to Galaxy S8 in terms of its bezel-less design language. It has also been tipped that the phablet will be priced around EUR 1,000 (roughly Rs. 75,400) and will likely be made available for pre-orders starting August 24, and it looks like Amazon India will get the rights to sell the Galaxy Note 8 in the country.

The Galaxy Note 8 will likely be exclusive to Amazon India based on the “Galaxy Unpacked” bannerdisplayed on the e-commerce site. Interestingly, Samsung’s recent Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ flagships were launched with Flipkart as the exclusive online partner. It still unclear whether the Galaxy Note 8 will also be available on Flipkart, but given the lack of promotional banner, it’s safe to say that it will be an Amazon exclusive.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Will Likely Be an Amazon India ExclusiveSamsung’s newest flagship is expected to sport a 6.3-inch QHD (1440×2960 pixels) Infinity Display with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9, which is marginally bigger than the Galaxy S8+. Past leaks suggest that it will be available in eight colour variants – Midnight Black, Arctic Silver, Orchid Gray/Violet, Coral Blue, Dark Blue, Deep Sea Blue, Pink, and Gold colour variants.

The Galaxy Note 8 is tipped to be powered by Exynos 8895 SoC globally, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 in the US and select other regions. It is also expected to come with a dual camera setup with two 12-megapixel sensors. The fingerprint sensor will be placed next to the camera setup similar to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. It will likely be offered in a 6GB+64GB configuration, but a 256GB storage variant has also been suggested. The handset is expected to measure 162.5×74.6×8.5mm. Galaxy Note 8 has been tipped to house a 3300mAh battery that can be charged either wirelessly or through USB Type-C.

The Galaxy Unpacked 2017 event will begin at 8.30pm IST (11am EDT in New York), and can be live streamed on Samsung India’s website.

LG V30+ Logo Leaked, LG Takes a Dig at Galaxy Note 8 in Video Teasers

LG will be unveiling its V30 flagship smartphone on August 31 right ahead of IFA event in Berlin and it seems like the company will now be launching two variants of the handset. The logo for LG V30+ smartphone has now been leaked and while there were rumours of a Plus variant earlier as well, the leaked logo strongly suggests the presence of the separate handset model. Further, LG has released teaser videos for the V30 smartphone that take a subtle dig at Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 8smartphone.

Talking first about the logo, popular tipster Evan Blass aka @evleaks has shared the logo for the LG V30+ on Twitter. As we mentioned in the earlier report, despite the ‘+’ moniker, which usually suggests a larger size, both LG V30 and the V30+ are expected to sport 6-inch OLED Full Vision display. The LG V30+ has been said to come with 128GB of built-in storage while the regular variant will feature 64GB of inbuilt storage. The key difference between regular and V30+ variant has been tipped to be in audio department and wireless charging capabilities. However, it is currently unclear which smartphone will get which of these features.

LG V30+ Logo Leaked, LG Takes a Dig at Galaxy Note 8 in Video TeasersBoth the variants of the smartphone are expected to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 SoC and a rear-facing dual camera setup consisting of a 16-megapixel sensor and a 13-megapixel sensor. Again, the two variants are expected to pack 6GB RAM and 3200mAh battery. Finally coming to the pricing, the LG V30 and LG V30+ have been estimated to be priced around 800,000 KRW (roughly Rs. 44,900) and KRW 1,000,000 (roughly Rs. 56,100) respectively.

Moving on to the video teasers, LG has taken a dig at the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 from Samsung as one video shows a person breaking a pencil into two pieces (direct shot at S Pen) and another where a person tearing a page from a diary (Note reference). Considering Samsung’s upcoming flagship is expected to come with solid features and specifications, we will have to wait and see if these digs come back to haunt the company or not.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 With 6.3-Inch AMOLED Display Launched: Price, Specifications, Release Date, and More

Is Samsung ready to put behind the disastrous Galaxy Note 7? It sure thinks so. To much fanfare, enthusiastic executives from the Suwon-headquartered company bolted on stage at a media event in New York on Wednesday to unveil the Galaxy Note 8, its new large-screen flagship smartphone, and its strongest weapon to fight the rumoured iPhone 8 and new Google Pixel phones.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 – which comes in Midnight Black, Maple Gold, Orchid Grey, and Deep Sea Blue colours – will be available for pre-orders in select markets starting Thursday and will start shipping on September 15. In the US, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 base variant is priced between $930 (roughly Rs. 59,500) on AT&T and $960 on (roughly Rs. 61,500) on Verizon.

Those who pre-order the smartphone will be able to avail a Gear 360 camera or a charging bundle at no price, and Samsung is also said to be offering Galaxy Note 7 customers discounts in a bid to encourage them to purchase the Note 8.

There is no word on when the company plans to launch the Galaxy Note 8 in India just yet, though Amazon India seems to be an official partner.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 specifications

Samsung is pulling no punches with its new smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is bigger than ever – literally – sporting a 6.3-inch QuadHD+ AMOLED Infinity Display of resolution 1440×2960. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC (with some markets getting the Samsung Exynos octa-core variant), packs 64GB of internal storage, 6GB of RAM, and support for microSD card slot, should you need more space. The Galaxy Note also offers Bluetooth 5.0 and LTE Cat 16 connectivity features.

For photography, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has dual 12-megapixel rear cameras with optical image stabilisation (OIS) on both the f/1.7 wide-angle lens and the f/2.4 telephoto lenses with 2x optical zoom. There’s an f/1.7 8-megapixel camera on the front. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 sports a 3300mAh battery and it runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The device offers IP68 water and dust resistances, and support for wireless charging, a feature that the upcoming iPhone 8 is rumoured to feature as well. The Galaxy Note 8 also supports NFC and MST for Samsung Pay and features a USB Type-C port.

“The dual-camera setup in the Note 8 is clearly intended to compete with Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 Plus, but Apple is likely to move that feature forward this year too, which may leave the Note 8’s feature behind the higher-end iPhone especially,” Jan Dawson, analyst at Jackdaw Research said.

Then, of course, is the signature S-Pen accessory, which the company says will enable people to communicate in “more personal ways” than ever with the Always On-display powered Galaxy Note 8. Samsung has also introduced Live Messages, that will allow people to go beyond texting in their communication with friends. With the S-Pen, users will be able to handwrite a message, add special effects and share it as an animated GIF via several popular messaging and social apps.

A lot is riding on the Galaxy Note 8, whose predecessor cost the company about $5.3 billion (roughly Rs. 35,433 crores), not to mention the lost brand value.

“The Note 8 is an important release for the company for several reasons. While it is a smaller contributor to Samsung’s revenue than the S8, it is a strong differentiator,” Ross Rubin, principal analyst at Reticle Research told Gadgets 360. “It will represent a major leap forward for Note 5 users. Samsung has detailed the steps it has taken to ensure battery safety and it can point to the S8 as evidence that it is back on track.”

“To bridge the digital divide, the cabinet headed by Chief Minister Raman Singh today approved a proposal to distribute free smartphones under a scheme titled ‘Sanchar Kranti Yojna’ (SKY),” Industry Minister Amar Agrawal said.

The smartphones will be distributed in rural areas and to the below poverty line (BPL) families in urban areas and college-going youths in two phases, he said.

In the first phase, smartphones will be distributed in the villages with a population of more than 1,000, to BPL families in urban areas, and college students.

Some 50.8 lakh handsets would be distributed in the first phase in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Chhattisgarh Government to Distribute Over 55 Lakh SmartphonesAnother 4.8 lakh smartphones will be distributed in villages which have a population of less than 1,000, and lack mobile network coverage.

Simultaneously, telecom service providers will be encouraged to expand their networks in these areas, the minister said.

The smartphone will be issued in the name of the female member of the family.

Phone numbers allotted with handsets will come pre-linked to Aadhaar number and bank accounts of beneficiaries, Agrawal said.

Telecom service providers will be allowed to install mobile towers atop government buildings free of cost, he added.
